William Morris Fabrics

London Fabric Company extensive fabric range also includes the eponymous Morris Collections.
William Morris (1834-1896) can be thought of as the single most influential designer of the nineteenth century, as well as a political theorist, scholar, translator and publisher, an environmental campaigner, writer and poet. Under his direction Morris & Company grew into a flourishing and fashionable decorating firm renowned for its wallpapers and textiles. Morris & Co designs originate in the Arts and Crafts movement popular in late Victorian "artistic homes of taste" and remain widely appreciated to this day.

Morris & Company guarantees authentic versions of the original designs alongside new interpretations, using innovations in printing and weaving technology to create up-to-date fabric and wallpaper designs with timeless appeal. Some of Morris & Company notable collections include: the Artichoke which is taken from a Morris & Company wallpaper designed by John Henry Dearle in 1898 and has been translated as a richly detailed weave. Indeed clients can appreciate first-hand this as London Fabric Company features a tailored made panel of the Artichoke design on one of the showroom walls. The Chrysanthemum Toile fabric which has been adapted from a wallpaper sample produced by Jeffrey & Company in 1886 as an imitation of gilded leather hangings fashionable at that time.

In the Willow Boughs collection, Morris took nature as his prime inspiration, and according to his daughter May, the idea for this foliage pattern of 1887 came from the willow trees growing near his house on the banks of the river Thames. The Lily Embroidery design has been adapted from a Morris block printed wallpaper dating from 1874 and shows a hand screen printed background of tiny leaf trails on linen union over which exquisite groups of flowers such as lilies and daisies have been embroidered.
