TweedTweed: a coarse wool cloth in a variety of weaves and colours, either hand-spun and handwoven in Scotland or reproduced, often by machine, elsewhere. Tweed is a type of fabric using the twill weave. Twill is a type of fabric woven with a pattern of diagonal parallel ribs. It is made by passing the weft threads over one warp thread and then under two or more warp threads. Examples of twill fabric are gabardine, tweed and serge. Tweed is a rough, coarse, itchy, unfinished woollen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. |

Tweed is made in either plain or twill weave and may have a check or herringbone pattern. Subdued, interesting colour effects (heather mixtures) are obtained by twisting together differently coloured woolen strands into a two- or three-ply yarn.
