HorsehairHorsehair became popular in the late 18th century for upholstery for high quality furniture designers as Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Biedermeier; thus, very suitable today for the restoration of antiques. Recent restorations of London's Mansion House employed horsehair for upholstery. Horsehair is also suitable for many types of modern furniture as they are durable, easy to care for and with a lustre. Cotton, Silk or Linen is used in the warp and horsehair is laid in the weft. The hair must be carefully mixed and drawn through the teeth of a large comb before been presented to the picking mechanism of the loom. |
